Mature tourists Opt for soft skiing

As the baby boomer generation matures, generation Y (age 20-35) have dominated the European slopes this season. This is not to say, however, that older winter holidaymakers are in decline. Instead of snowparks and off-piste runs, the baby-boomers are simply seeking out soft skiing alternatives, such as spas, sledding and Alpine walking

‘Soft skiing is becoming an ever-increasing trend in Austria. We are seeing a huge increase in buyers seeking out activities that are suitable for all the family and Austrian resorts are responding to this by investing in ski-alternatives such as hiking trails, alpine spas and tobogganing’ – Jessica Delaney, Alpine Marketing.

Obergurgl & Hochgurgl

Known as the ‘Diamond in the Alps’, Obergurgl is a snow-sure resort that provides plenty of soft skiing opportunities. You can access most of it’s traditional ski huts by foot! Running from the centre of the town, the Hohe Mut Bahn Gondola transports holidaymakers directly to the Hohe Mut Alm ski-hut. Offering sun-soaked terraces and authentic Tyrolean dishes, this ski hut is open to all! When considered with the resort’s luxury Glacier spa that boasts saunas, steam baths and beauty treatments, Obergurgl is set to attract both hard and soft-skiers from all over the world this season.

Originating over 4,000 years ago, snowshoes have been used by skiers throughout the ages. In 2018 however, the sport is predicted to experience somewhat of a Renaissance, as Austrian resorts like Ischgl invests in a snowshoe trail that guides visitors through the Paznauntal valley. The Moonshine hike takes place every Wednesday for groups or individuals, and the three walk is finished with a traditional fondue for all.
