St. Anton has become the place to be for the advanced skier seeking more challenging pistes with slopes from 1320m to 2811m. The resort forms part of the Arlberg Ski Region with 348km of groomed pistes, comprising of 146km blue runs, 147km red runs, and 55km black runs with over 94 state of the art lifts servicing the area between December and May. If this isn’t enough, the region is also set to see a new cable car connecting St. Anton and Lech, adding even more accessible, snow sure skiing to this already great resort. The 200km of off-piste skiing in this area is legendary but should only be attempted by expert skiers or those accompanied by a guide.
With an exciting terrain, St. Anton has increasingly become a mecca for snowboarders seeking new thrills and is described by the World Snowboard Guide as “The best resort in Austria, with great freeriding for advanced and intermediate riders.” Away from the slopes, the large outdoor ice rink is open for skating or you can try your hand at curling or take a refreshing dip in the open-air heated Olympic swimming pool. For some real winter magic, the hour long journey through the Vernwall valley in a horse drawn sleigh is an absolute must!
It is certainly not surprising that the Orient Express stops at St. Anton, the playground for the successful and affluent wishing to enjoy life in the snow! With over 60 restaurants and bars it is as famous for its après ski nightlife as it is for it’s fabulous slopes.
Fresh from the pistes people often meet at one of the slope-side bars such as “Mooserwirt” where you can drink and relax until 8pm, then simply ski down into the town where an array of restaurants and bars await. The most popular bar is undoubtedly “Kandahar” with daily live music although there is plenty on offer for those wanting a more relaxing atmosphere with lovely traditional gasthofs and restaurants serving regional and international delicacies.
The unspoilt valleys surrounding St. Anton offer a host of summer activities. There are 300km of signposted hiking trails and a further 200km of mountain biking routes, horse riding and mountain climbing. The incredible Supersauser summer toboggan run is not to be missed – a gondola will take you to the lofty heights of 1,400m then once in your toboggan you will speed down a 800m track full of sharp twists and over valley bridges – fabulously thrilling!
The new Arl-rock sports centre is very popular with families and offers tennis, volleyball, bowling, indoor football, squash and climbing. For those who like to take things slower, in the centre of St. Anton is the fabulous Arlberg wellness centre with three swimming pools, saunas, solariums, a gym and many indulgent treatments available; the perfect spot to sit back and unwind after a long day exploring the surrounding countryside.
