What We Love About Mauterndorf:

Snowy Mautendorf pano

Mauterndorf is a small market town located in the Salzburg province, in the heart of Austria. This historic town straddles the Taurach river and is home to an impressive medieval castle which sits high above the town. Mauterndorf lies at the foot of the Grosseck-Speiereck ski area which offers 50km of skiing while snow-sure Obertauern’s 100km of pistes are just 15 minutes away.

The peaceful town is also a great summer destination thanks to its variety of magnificent hiking and biking trails, rustic Alpine huts, rich history and hearty food. This part of Austria has also been named a UNESCO biosphere park thanks to its biodiversity, distinctive local traditions and sustainable development. Mauterndorf is only 70 minutes from Salzburg airport and 75 minutes’ drive from Klagenfurt airport, to which Easyjet now flies!

Ski Scene:

Mauterndorf is located at the heart of the Lungau ski region which offers a total of 150km of pistes. These span across the Grosseck-Speiereck, Katschberg-Aineck and Fanningberg slopes. With 49km of blue pistes, 74km of red pistes and a further 27km of more challenging black pistes, there are lots of perfectly groomed slopes on the doorstep.

Our ski property for sale in Mauterndorf benefits from reliable snow in November through until April. As well as this, many new ski lifts and free ski buses for ski pass holders have become available, making access to the slopes simple. Ski runs offer up to 1,400m of descent and range up to 9km. Mauterndorf also has a ski school and nursery plus a ski shop which rents out skis. You can also hire bobsleighs and toboggans if you fancy taking a different route down the mountainside!

For even more skiing, the snow-sure resort of Obertauern is just 15 minutes away. Here you will find a further 100km of pistes. This high altitude resort offers 60km of blue slopes, 36km of reds and 4km of black piste plus 26 ski lifts. Another bonus is that the Obertauern ski pass covers the Mauterndorf pistes too, so with just one ski pass you can access a wide range of slopes.

Other winter activities on offer include cross-country skiing with 240km of trails to explore plus a number of skating courses. Winter hiking is also available as are horse drawn sleigh rides. For something completely different, why not take an outdoor winter driving course where you can hone your skills driving around an icy race track!

Summer Fun:

Mauterndorf lies in a bright and open valley position with great views of the surrounding mountains. The town is located in one of Austria’s most unspoilt regions. Our ski property for sale in Mauterndorf is located in one of Austria’s sunniest resorts, receiving over 200 days of sunshine per year. For the best view of the town, visit the castle and climb up the 44m high fortified tower where you can enjoy the panoramic views over the rooftops.

This charming town is surrounded by magnificent hiking and biking with a variety of trails on offer for all abilities.

Mauterndorf is home to a number of nature trails with beautiful paths winding through forests as well as a number of themed walks. Guided mountaineering tours and rock climbing are also possible. Or for something more challenging, cycle along the Mur Valley trail which passes Mauterndorf and keeps going all the way to Croatia!

There are also a number of small lakes dotted around the mountainsides where you can relax on warm summer days. Another great way to cool down is white water rafting on one of the region’s rivers. Other activities available include horse riding, tennis, swimming and paragliding for a spectacular aerial view of this beautiful area.

Alternatively you could explore the area by historic steam trains on Austria’s highest narrow gauge railway!

Golfers are well catered for too with an 18-hole tournament golf course just five minutes from Mauterndorf. The par-72 Lungau-Katschberg course has a 9-hole practice course and a 280m driving range plus a wonderful clubhouse and restaurant. Four further golf courses are within easy reach.
